When we moved to Suffolk in May 2023, after five happy years in France, I had to leave my old studio. Luckily, I was able to bring my kiln, wheel, and tools to the UK, but I had nowhere to set up a studio, as we are in rented accommodation.
It was then that my younger brother, who who we now live close to, came up with the idea to base my workshop at his house, utilising his carport.
This proved to be an excellent idea, as two sides of the space and the roof are of solid construction and all that was required was to seal each end with wooden walls and doors to allow the movement of lawnmowers etc.

The fitted doors and work surface with sink
Construction started in autumn 2023 and I was making pots in there before Christmas. There is a work surface on one side with a double sink to which Iadded a custom clay trap. On the other side, the kiln had a fireproofed shell built around it. The wheel sits in the front of the studio to make best use of the daylight. I have developed it in subsequent months and now have shelves all around to dry and store ceramics. A new workbench gives me a glazing table. I have hot and cold running water, but heating is a challenge. I am now looking for an energy-efficient solution, but may have to continue wearing lots of jumpers in winter!
Enjoy some photos of the space in development. I love it and spend as much time as I can in there.
